Watching Out For Gum Disease

Gum disease can sneak up on you if you do not know what to look for.

Gum disease starts out as gingivitis, a preventable, reversible inflammation of the gums. With gingivitis you may notice red, swollen gums and bleeding when brushing and flossing. You can tackle gingivitis by getting a professional cleaning 2-3 time per year and brushing and flossing regularly. Using mouthwash and using a power or battery operated toothbrush can supplement your daily oral hygiene routine and keep gingivitis at bay.

Gingivitis can progress to gum disease or periodontitis if left unchecked. Periodontitis is an infection in your gums that can break down the bone and other tissues that hold your teeth in place.

With Periodontitis/Gum Disease you might notice:

  • receding gums or longer teeth

  • teeth that are loose or shifting

  • a change in the way your teeth fit together

  • a bad taste or bad breath that will not go away no matter how much you brush

Gum Disease will require the intervention of a Dentist, schedule an appointment with your dentist today if you notice any of these signs of gum disease. Together, you and your dentist can fight gum disease to improve your overall health and preserve your teeth.
